Update
Well there you have it. 43 days ago, I sent out a call to the community. A call for help on a project that is really dear to my heart. Many emails, a couple of phonecalls and a crazy night later, it's all here! And then some.
For the statisticians:
55 people have bought the book "Exerpts from a lucky year"
22 people have bought the book "Indonesia, archipelago of 17000 ilands"
8 framed photos found new homes
The strenght of the community is astounding.
Again, a HUGE thank you for believing in me.
see you soon!

Context
As many of you already know, in 2011, I went back to school with the ultimate goal of becoming a marine biologist. A plan of several years that begins with a college course in Bioecology. This technical training program culminates in a 10-week unpaid internship in the workplace.
Many students will choose training sites in the region where we can apply the concepts learned in our courses to advance research on local species. Marine biology options in the region can be summarized in the observation of little guppies and empty beer cans at the bottom of Lake Memphremagog.
Personally, I prefer something a little more exotic. That is why I chose to go do my internship in Bali, Indonesia.

Bali ??
Of course, Bali! An organization called the Karang Lestari project has been active over there in the past 13 years in restoring coral reefs that were damaged either by overfishing, pollution or climate change. This is the biggest reasearch of the sort in the whole world, one spearheaded by a leading expert in coral reef restauration.
Their project involves the construction of steel structures, installing them in the ocean, grafting coral fragments on these structures and then sending a mild electrical current to restart an entire ecosystem. This innovative process helps create coral reefs much faster at higher temperatures and in less favorable conditions!
Rani Elfriede Morrow-Wuigk advisor for the Bio-Rock center of the Karang Lestari project has recently filmed some images of the evolution of the site. Click here to see a video of what it looks like.

But why is a coral reef important?
Coral reefs, particularly in the tropics, provide ecological niches for many animals that find food, shelter, protection and refuge. Numerous fish species are also dependent of the reefs. Corals are home to more than 25% of global marine biodiversity (although they do not occupy the more than 0.1% of the ocean surface). These reefs are also an important part of oceanic carbon wells on Earth.

Well if you put it like that...
Indeed. That's why I approached the conservation group to see if I could help them during my 10 week internship. An introductory email and 6 hours of waiting later, a reply came back from the other side of the world: "I see by your website that you're a photographer, your pictures are great! It just happens that we need a photographic inventory and study of growth of our artificial structures. Do you have an underwater camera? "
I see where you're going...
And this is where this all takes form! Some options are available to me. I can buy an "ok" underwater camera that takes "ok" pictures or I can buy a professional tool that will serve me for many years to come. Personally, I think I do not have the means to buy a product of poor quality. This is why, being industrious in nature, I have set up this page to make available the sale of a photographic book I have produced earlier this year entitled "Excerpts from a lucky year". I am also selling the forthcoming book made up of the pictures I will be taking during this trip to Indonesia as a means of funding this professional tool!

Phew, I thought you wanted donations.
Well, in fact, yes and no. I do not want to ask you for money without something to trade you for it, but if you feel the urge to shower me with money, I will refuse nothing. That is why I have listed several options on the right which will help fund the project. Read them all and choose what interests you (if anything interests you). You will buy some art while at the same time help to save your planet. Not a bad trade ...
By choosing the electronic version of the book "Excerpts from a lucky year" you will obtain a book collecting the best pictures I've taken this year. This item will be delivered by Christmas 2013. Why not give one to someone you love as a gift?
You can also participate in the pre-sale of the next book I'm going to make with the best photos taken in the depths of underwater Bali! This book will be delivered before Christmas in 2014, after I return from my internship.
If you are urging to get a tangible version of the book rather than the electronic version and you live far away from North America, email me first. We'll have to see about shipping costs before doing any transaction. But it's all possible!

The final word
This unpaid internship of 10 weeks is the kind of learning experience that I did not think I would have the chance to experience before another 4, maybe 5 more years of study. It is offered to me now, I think it's worth it to push in this direction with full steam. In addition, I will get a foot in the door of a company that works directly in my field of study. Who knows where it could lead!
This unpaid internship will take place in late March to early July 2014. I have until that date to raise the funds!
Merci!

"Excerpts from a lucky year"
This book is titled excerpts from a lucky year because that is exactly what it contains. It originates from a (very ambitious) project orbiting around Stephanie’s birthday, this year being her lucky year (she turned 28 on the 28th).
That specific project’s aim was to document that very special year in an almost insane way, taking one picture per day, every day for a whole calendar year. What came out of that book were 365 pages of images reflecting this lucky year particularly full of fun-filled activities and encounters.
In this monstrous work, I managed to capture portraits of friends old and new, a couple of beautiful landscapes that we visited, an animal or two, some conceptual imagery and some photos that came out as almost abstract works of art from the things that crossed my path during that year.
From that very personal work of art, I have extracted the images that you will find in the book I am selling today. Personally, I think they are the cream of the crop so do not be saddened that you are not witnessing the project in its entirety. If it really bothers you though, you could always ask Stephanie nicely and I am certain she will entertain you with the whole year-long project, in exchange for 2 hours of your time.
